The Piero Trail
In 1992, the BBC commemorated the 500th anniversary of Piero’s death with a feature-length programme, The Piero Trail.
This documentary included many informed interviews and examined in detail the perspectival exactitude of the painting through a specially commissioned model.
This project seeks to solve the riddle of this extraordinary work, through the construction of a chronological overlay of events and a timeline stretching back two thousand years, before the scene depicted in the painting, and moving through to the present day.
Whilst some interpretations have recognised the work’s sense of otherness and the Renaissance lexicon of signs and symbols have been acknowledged, they have never been fully explored.
Deciphering these elements is crucial to gaining an understanding of the painting as a whole.
